At bus stations, ferry piers, and airports — especially on islands like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, and Koh Chang — touts and unofficial 'helpers' ask where you are staying. When you name your hotel, they claim it is full, closed for renovation, flooded, or has a pest problem. They then offer to take you to a 'better' alternative that is actually an inferior guesthouse paying them commission. During high season, some touts are bold enough to claim this even for major hotels. On smaller islands, touts may physically steer you before you can verify by phone.
