Outside the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and other major Bangkok temples, well-dressed touts (sometimes wearing quasi-official outfits) approach tourists and say the temple is 'closed for a ceremony,' 'closed for lunch,' or 'closed for a royal event.' They then helpfully suggest a tuk-tuk driver who can take you to other sights while you wait. The tuk-tuk tour is actually the commission shop loop described above. The Grand Palace is open every day from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM and closes only for actual royal ceremonies (which are announced officially and are very rare). This scam has been running for over 20 years and remains one of the most reported in Bangkok.
